Jameh Mosque of Isfahan Iran (also known as Masjed Jameh Atigh or Atigh Mosque of Isfahan) is located at the historic part of Isfahan city – in Ghiam square at the end of the great bazaar of Isfahan. Jameh Mosque is one of the oldest still standing mosques in Iran, established in 771 AD, with reconstructions and renovations continuing in different eras until the 20th century. The mosque counts as one the prominent Isfahan attractions.

Jameh Mosque of Isfahan is the most significant and oldest architectural and religious complex in Iran and is considered the oldest historical building in Isfahan. Today, it consists various parts, each representing developments of the art of architecture through different Islamic periods.

#1 The UNESCO Registered World Heritage Site

Different parts of the Congregational Mosque, which were added to the UNESCO world heritage list, were formed around 2000 years and were under renovation and repairs during these years. Jameh Mosque of Isfahan has been a UNESCO world heritage site since 2012.

#2 Isfahan Congregational Mosque or a Zoroastrian house of worship?

Before Islamic period and Arab invasions, some of the current mosques including Jameh mosque of Isfahan Iran, were the place of worship for Zoroastrians. At the Islamic period, the application of some fire temples were changed into the mosques. The building of the fire temple became a part of a mosque and Iwans were added around it.

The current appearance of Atigh Mosque is associated with Seljuk proceedings and the repairs and extensions occurred in the next periods of Jameh Mosque of Isfahan History especially in Safavid dynasty. Meanwhile, the archaeological excavations show that the phenomena belongs to the third century AH and before Islamic period.

Archaeology excavations show that Congregational Mosque was an important religious center in the city before even Arabs dominate Isfahan City, and was used as a Zoroastrian fire temple. During Jameh Mosque of Isfahan History, the niche was destructed in third century AH and the direction of Qibla was corrected.

Jameh Mosque of Isfahan Architecture is one of the most significant works of architecture in Iran. It represents a condensed history of Iranian Architecture.

Jameh Mosque of Isfahan Architecture has been designed based on the four Iwan plan. The Iwans signify one of the interesting techniques of Iranian architecture through vaulted ornaments named Muqarnas (niche-like cells).

Entrance

Atigh Mosque includes different entrances, each connecting the mosque’s space to different parts of the surrounding areas. Congregational Mosque of Isfahan Entrances are decorated with Mugharnas, friezes and great tile-workings. Friezes include verses from Quran or sayings from prophets and Imams.

Decoration and Interior design

Interior appearance of the court yard in Atigh Mosque  and its tile works dates back to ninth century AH and the minarets are also of the same period. Spectacular features of Atigh Mosque of Isfahan Architecture include the exquisite tile-working of the vaulted ornaments, detailed plaster-moldings, beautiful columns and friezes.

Thanks for the post. I am visiting Iran next year, and my friends recommended me to visit this mosque, they had really enjoyed the beauty of the monument. but my question is are there step on guides available at the mosque?
